Gather your supplies   (courtesy of Better Homes and Gardens)
Pallet; timber post tops or stubby chest legs; white undercoat sealer; red top coat (or other colour of choice); 25mm self-adhesive felt pads; 10mm safety glass top to suit pallet, with a 12-25mm radius at corners and polished edges.
Note: Australian standard hardwood pallets are 1165 x 1165mm in size. They have deck boards on both surfaces, which gives you a handy magazine rack. Euro Pallets (often softwood) are 1200 x 800mm (although other sizes are made) and only have the deck boards nailed to one surface.
Here's how
Step 1 Clean up your pallet by driving in all the nails so they are not proud. If any joints are loose, add extra nails or screws to stiffen the pallet. Sand timber as smooth as possible. Use a block or sanding machine as the timber used for pallets is typically very rough with plenty of splinters.
Step 2 Drill holes, a suitable diameter to glue in the post tops or chest legs,
in the outer corners on the underside of the pallet stringers. If screw-in units are used, drive a dowel screw into the stringer then wind on the leg.
Step 3 Give all the timber 2 coats of white undercoat to completely cover the timber. When dry, sand lightly and apply your main colour. If the paint does not cover well (red often does not) apply a second coat. When thoroughly dry, sand again until the undercoat just shows through in some places. When you're happy with the look, protect the surface with a coat of a clear finish such as hard-wearing polyurethane.
Step 4 Stick a 25mm self-adhesive felt pad in each corner. Order 10mm safety glass to suit pallet top and have it supplied with a small radius at each corner, and with all edges polished.

Have a wonderful weekend,
